I love traditional holiday decor. Green and red and gold and things that sparkle and light-up. Plaids throws, wreaths hanging with ribbon, and ornaments with character. Luxe fabrics like velvet and wool and satin. It’s all so good.
Saturday night Dan and I hosted our second murder mystery party – the first was a “Murder of a Millionaire” for my 30th birthday two years ago – but this time around we wanted to combine it with a Halloween party and needed a spooookier theme.
Enter A Vampire Murder Mystery. We figured the costumes would be easy for everyone, the theme would be perfect for the holiday, and decorating would be super fun for me to transform our home into the Castle of Shadows, home to a vampire clan.
As you know tomorrow night Dan and I are hosting a Vampire-themed Murder Mystery! I’ll be doing a full recap w/ food, invitations, costumes, and how it’s set up w/ lighting and FOG MACHINE, but I wanted to show you a sneak peek of how the space is coming together…
I knew as soon as we moved into our house that I was going to decorate our front stoop for the holidays! And by holidays I mean… starting in October with festive fall decor. I posted about my inspiration here.
I teamed up with the folks at Home Depot–which has been my go-to source for plants, Christmas trees, planters, etc. for years–to create a harvest pumpkin delight on our front steps.
Now that my home tour is live on The Everygirl, I am hoping to walk you through the design process of our house! Show you how we went from move-in to what it looks like today. First up the living room.
I walked you through the design plan for the living room here. But this will give you a better sense of the timeline and thought process behind it all!
It’s been nine months since we moved into our #schmiedskigreystone and not a day has gone by that I wasn’t in some way thinking about the makeover of this place. Yes, even on our honeymoon I was collecting inspiration from the hotels and restaurants we stayed at and visited, and picked out art in Paris (while also toootally being romantic and in love… but yea.)
I’m so excited it’s FINALLY here–the place is done–everything has its place, and now we can just ENJOY our home!
Hah yeah right. More like – now I’m getting started on holiday! Woop woop! It never does end with me. 🙂
But that’s neither here nor there.
It’s fall! Ok, apparently it’s not fall til September 22 or something BUT here’s how I look at it. It’s my favorite season, and it’s the shortest season by a longshot. So I try and stretch it out as long as possible, and as far as I am concerned, going back to school = FALL. And the 55 degree temps I woke up to this morning would agree. 🙂
Now that I have a front stoop of my own to decorate. I’ve spent the last 5 years or so building up my Christmas decor collection. But I am ready for the next step. FALL DECOR. Who’s with me?!
This week I finally shot my home tour with Chicago photographer Aimee Mazzenga! Hoorah!! Of course that means I spent all of last weekend cleaning, organizing and zhushing. Because no matter how “done” your place is, there are always a few last minute styling requirements to get it photo ready – dusting and ironing, picking up live plants and flowers, and getting fresh versions of anything that gets used regularly or might be stained (think soap, hand towels).
As you may recall from the before tour, the stair runner in our home was in really bad shape. As soon as we looked at it, I knew it would have to be replaced while we lived here and our landlord wasn’t going to do it. It was going to be one of the projects we had to tackle if we signed the lease. Which we did.
Let’s call this a lesson in looking past previous tenant’s belongings – for all of you who may be apartment or home hunting. We found photos of our place when it was available for rent years ago.
Three guys lived here before us. Of course I am going to decorate a bit differently.
